4 cases of alleged mistreatment of dogs, including 1 death, surfaces against pet boarding house in a week
Pet owners' worst nightmare.
Zhangxin Zheng | December 29, 2018 @ 11:09 am

December is a great time for an overseas trip to spend time with loved ones.

However, not many families can bring their fur-kids along and will turn to leaving their pets with boarding houses.

Unfortunately, that turned out to be a heartbreaking experience for a few dog owners recently.

In particular, Joanne Png, had to suffer the loss her beloved 14-year-old Jack Russell named QQ upon returning from her holiday.

Jack Russell’s death

Png left her dog, a jack russell, under the care of a pet boarding house called Platinium Dogs Club for seven days while she went on the trip.

Png uploaded screen shots of a WhatsApp conversation with the boarder, Rachel, asking why there was blood in QQ’s faeces.

Rachel did not account for the blood in QQ’s faeces throughout the conversation despite being prompted to reply for at least three times.

Png also mentioned that the boarder did not reach out to Png’s emergency contact immediately when QQ’s condition deteriorated at the boarding house.

Png was only informed on the last day of QQ’s stay and QQ was brought to the vet for treatment.

Unfortunately, QQ passed away at around 5pm on Dec. 28.

Besides QQ, Png also left another dog in the care of the same boarding house.

In the WhatsApp conversation, the boarder accused Png of harassment and wanted to go to the police station to ‘settle’ the dispute.

It was also implied in the chat that the boarder was chasing for payment despite having paid for the service already.
Screenshot from Joanne Png’s Facebook page

This incident was also reported on Channel 8 news which showed photos of QQ in its last moments and named Platinium Dogs Club.

A Shih-Tzu experience

Png’s Facebook post detailing QQ’s death also attracted other petowners to share their unpleasant experiences with Platinium Dogs Club.

Elaine Yong detailed her less-than-ideal experience with the boarding house in a Facebook post on Dec. 20.

Yong said that her dog was ‘very unhappy, very uncomfortable and very dirty’ when she requested for a WhatsApp photograph update during the dog’s stay.

Yong later discovered injuries on her Shih-Tzu such as abrasions on two legs, inflammatory testicles and the bleeding skin on its penis.

Rachel claimed that she did not notice these injuries when the dog was staying over at the boarding house and eventually blocked Yong on WhatsApp.

The boarder also claimed that the Shih-Tzu finished five and a half packs of dry food and two cans of dog food which Yong prepared for her dog prior to its stayover but according to Yong, it is impossible for her Shih-Tzu to finish this amount of food in five days.

Chow Chow skin problems

Here’s another case shared on Dec. 25 against the boarding house where a Chow Chow had to have its fur shaved because of a skin condition.

This was what the Chow Chow looked like before staying in the boarding house.

Here are some photos showing the skin issues and injuries that the Chow Chow allegedly suffered after staying at the boarding house.

Blind Cocker Spaniel

In a Facebook post on Dec. 28, the Chained Dog Awareness in Singapore (CDAS) Facebook page urged the owners to retrieve their blind cocker spaniel from the boarding house.

The dog named Sparky was allegedly trying to get out of the house and whining loudly when it was spotted.

Fortunately, Sparky was back home already.

The post about Sparky also led to two more dog owners to share their experience with this boarding house, one happened in September and another on Dec. 28.

The owner also recalled seeing a man who might be working for a dog cremation service provider when she picked her Japanese Spitz, Glacier, up.

Hope these doggos get well soon.

Under investigation

The Platinium Dogs Club’s website has since been taken down.

According to Channel 8 News the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore is currently investigating the business.

Pet boarding houses are commercial businesses that are not allowed to operate out of private residential premises.

It was reported that the house where Platinium Dogs Club occupies is a rental residential property.

The owner rented this house to a tenant for S$4,000 per month.

According to Channel 8 News, the owner intends to terminate the rental contract after receiving complaints of excessive dog barking during the December school holidays.

Shanmugam assures thorough investigations on Platinium Dogs Club saga
Staff Writer, Singapore | 5 January 2019

UPDATE: Joint AVA-police media statement on their investigations.

Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam has assured that there will be thorough investigations and due process on the saga involving alleged animal mistreatment at pet boarding house Platinium Dogs Club.

In a message posted on his Facebook page on Saturday (5 January), he noted that several serious allegations have been made against the facility, and that both the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) and the police have been actively investigating the allegations.

“Police have raided the Club as part of the investigations,” he wrote in the post. “Singaporeans can rest assured: there will be thorough investigations and there will be due process. Anyone who has engaged in illegal acts will face the consequences.

“There are also allegations that some people, in response, have also acted wrongly, and taken the law into their own hands. Those allegations will also be investigated.”

AVA and the police released a joint media statement later on Saturday, and said, “The Police and AVA’s investigations will be thorough and fair.

“The public is advised not to take matters into their own hands or engage in any actions that may violate the law or cause harm to themselves and others. The public should also refrain from speculation, and let the investigations take their course.”

They added that anyone who wishes to provide information in relation to Platinium Dogs Club can contact AVA at 1800-4761600.

The saga unfolded after several dog owners claimed in the past few weeks that their pets had been mistreated by Platinium under its care. One dog owner told Yahoo News Singapore that QQ, her 14-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, died after a stay at the facility.

The complaints by the dog owners prompted an investigation by the AVA and raids of Platinium’s premises at 7 Galistan Avenue by the authorities on 29 and 31 December.  During inspections of the premises, the AVA found 18 dogs and a rabbit.

Separately, a worker at Mobile Pet Cremation Services, a pet cremation company, told Yahoo News Singapore on 31 December that he had handled requests from a woman in December for Mobile Pet’s services. The worker said three dogs were taken from the premises on separate occasions last month for cremation.

On Wednesday afternoon, police officers turned up at the Platinium premises after a woman, who is alleged to be linked to the controversial pet boarding facility, was caught in a standoff with the police.

During the standoff, several eyewitnesses claimed that while the woman was being driven out in a car as she tried to leave the house, the car was reversing and it hit a person.

In a statement issued on Wednesday night, the police said they were alerted to a case of a group of people who had gathered outside 7 Galistan Avenue, and was obstructing its driveway.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that a 40-year-old man from the group had alleged that he was hit by the vehicle that was reversing out of the compound of the unit. The man was subsequently conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital in a conscious state,” the statement said.

The 33-year-old driver of the vehicle and the group of people comprising seven women and four men, including the 40-year-old man, are assisting with police investigations, the police added.

According to eyewitnesses, there were several people standing outside the premises holding a “Missing Dog” notice bearing the picture of Prince, a seven-year-old Shetland sheepdog. Elaine Mao, a bid manager, had left Prince under the care of Platinium, but the dog was nowhere to be found during the raids by authorities.

Yahoo News Singapore understands that among the persons who were assisting the police investigations were those who had held the Missing Dog notice.

The saga has also sparked an online petition calling for stiffer penalties against animal abusers on Change.org, which has gathered nearly 47,000 signatures as of Saturday noon.

Platinium Dogs Club operator arrested by AVA, some owners reunited with their dogs
Jan 7, 2019 | Choo Yun Ting

SINGAPORE - The operator of pet boarding facility Platinium Dogs Club has been arrested, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and National Development Sun Xueling said in a Facebook post on Monday (Jan 7).

Ms Sun told The Straits Times that a 30-year-old woman was arrested. Responding to queries, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) confirmed that she was arrested on Sunday.

ST understands she is being held at Tanglin Police Division.

In her post, Ms Sun said that the operator is assisting with AVA's investigations into alleged animal welfare offences.

"The AVA is continuing investigations into the Platinium Dogs Club, including making further inspections," said Ms Sun, who is an MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.

The authorities will take enforcement action on any animal welfare infringements, she added.

Several pet owners who had boarded their dogs with Platinium Dogs Club have also been reunited with their pets.

AVA had previously taken the dogs into temporary custody to safeguard their welfare after a raid on the pet boarding facility.

"Let's stay calm and let the authorities investigate the case thoroughly and fairly," Ms Sun said.

AVA later took temporary custody of animals found on the premises.

On Jan 2, a group of dog owners gathered outside the gates of Platinium Dogs Club, demanding information on a missing shetland sheepdog named Prince.

A 40-year-old man in the group was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for outpatient treatment after being hit by a car which the operator of the pet boarding facility was travelling in.

The group of 11 had remained in the path of the car as it slowly reversed despite police officers advising the group to give way for their safety.

In a joint statement with AVA on Jan 5, the authorities said that the group were assisting the police with investigations.

Under the Animals and Birds Act, those who fail in their duty of care towards animals in the course of conducting an animal-related business face a maximum fine of $40,000 and/or a jail term of two years if convicted.

AVA confirms missing sheepdog Prince died while boarded at Platinium Dogs Club
09 Jan 2019 12:45PM |

SINGAPORE: The Shetland sheepdog that was reported missing after it was taken to Platinium Dogs Club had died while it was at the pet boarding centre, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) said on Wednesday (Jan 9).

In a Facebook update, AVA added that the dog was later cremated by a pet cremation service provider.

"Preliminary investigations have revealed that Prince, a Shetland Sheepdog reported to be missing from PDC (Platinium Dogs Club), had died while it was boarded there and was cremated by a pet cremation service provider," the update said.

Separately, the animals AVA had taken temporary custody following raids at the centre have been returned to their respective owners except for one dog, whose owner is not in Singapore, and a rabbit.

"We are continuing to establish ownership of the rabbit," said AVA.

"AVA’s investigation is still ongoing. The public is advised not to speculate and let the investigation take its course," it added.

"AVA takes animal welfare seriously and will take enforcement action against any offenders to safeguard animal welfare."

Platinium Dogs Club has been under investigation by the authorities following complaints of alleged mistreatment of animals under its care.

One of the pet owners was Ms Elaine Mao, who was told on Dec 30 that her Shetland sheepdog named Prince had gone missing after she took her pet to the centre on Dec 16.

Her dog was not among the animals that AVA had taken temporary custody of following raids at the pet boarding centre on Dec 29 and 31. Eighteen dogs and a rabbit were found by AVA at the pet boarding centre, a semi-detached house at 7 Galistan Avenue.

On Wednesday, Ms Mao described the loss of Prince as "totally unbearable".

"A part of me has gone with him," she said on a Facebook page called Lost and found pets in Singapore.

"Sorry for not responding to anything from now on as we need some time and space to calm down," she wrote.

The operator of Platinium Dogs Club, a 30-year-old woman, was arrested on Sunday.

She is assisting with investigations on alleged animal welfare-related offences, according to Senior Parliamentary Secretary for National Development Sun
Xueling in a Facebook post on Monday.

Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam pledged that there will be a "thorough investigation" into the pet boarding centre.

He said in a Facebook post on Saturday that "there are also allegations that some people, in response, have also acted wrongly, and taken the law into their own hands".

"Those allegations will also be investigated," he added.

On Jan 2, a 40-year-old man who was among a group of people who gathered outside Platinium Dogs Club's premises, was taken to hospital after a car knocked into him.

He was believed to be a volunteer helping one of the pet owners who had gone to the centre to confront the owner.

Under the Animal and Birds Act, those who fail in their duty of care towards the animals in the course of conducting an animal-related business may be fined up to S$40,000 or jailed for two years, or both.

"JS Hello" posted a comment in the youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q3PYLkHfog) stating that "I hope the dog will come into my dream and tell me what happen. "

My reply to her:
You may find this book to be comforting, titled "The Next Person You Meet in Heaven (https://nlb.overdrive.com/media/3865316)", esp. the 2nd person Annie met in Heaven... who was Annie's pet dog when she was alive. Source: https://nlb.overdrive.com/media/3865316

Extract from the book "
The Next Person You Meet in Heaven (https://nlb.overdrive.com/media/3865316)" Page 67:
Annie stared at the old woman in the coat.
    “Are you saying …?”
    “I’m Cleo.”
    “But you’re a woman.”
“I thought this form would be easier.”
Annie stared hard into Cleo’s eyes, trying to imagine the rest of her, her cocoa fur, her thin, floppy ears. She recalled the things Cleo recalled. She recalled Cleo getting older. She even recalled the day Cleo died, driving to the vet’s office in her mother’s car, a sluggish Cleo breathing slowly in her lap. But she did not know how these memories could matter now.
“Why are you here, Cleo?” Annie asked.
“To teach you something. Each soul you meet in heaven does the same.”
    “So animals have souls?”
    Cleo looked surprised.
    “Why wouldn’t they?” she said.

Additional message for Prince's owner, Elaine Mao:
1. No words can describe your grief and the reality that while time does not heal all wounds, it does help one reconcile with the reality and your history with Prince will always be precious moments. You may also find the book 'The Next Person You Meet in Heaven (https://nlb.overdrive.com/media/3865316)' to be comforting.
