Employment Scams: Four Individuals

4 arrested for allegedly scamming about 10 people under guise of $600 per day Jan 25, 2018 | Lydia Lam

SINGAPORE - Four people have been arrested for a series of scams in which they offered victims jobs to secure mobile phone contracts, only to saddle them with phone bills.

The two men, aged 39 and 45, and two women, aged 19 and 20, reportedly offered jobs that paid $600 per day.

Those who accepted the jobs were told to sign up for mobile phone contracts.

The suspects told the victims that the mobile phone contracts would be terminated immediately once they completed the jobs, with no charges incurred by the victims.

However, once the victims had signed up for the contracts and handed over the mobile phones, the suspects became uncontactable and did not terminate the contracts.

The victims had to pay for the phone bills that followed.

There were about 10 victims, with one of them making a police report on Jan 18.

After the report was made, officers from Bedok Police Division conducted extensive investigations and identified the suspects in Orchard Road on Wednesday (Jan 24).

The 20-year-old female suspect will be charged in court with cheating.

If convicted, she can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.

Investigations are ongoing against the other three suspects.
