Couple beats restaurant owner, her teen daughter over fast food order
By Amanda Woods | June 25, 2017 | 9:51am |

Shocking surveillance video shows the moment a Georgia couple brutally beat a restaurant employee and her teenage daughter — all because they weren’t satisfied with their order.

The couple, identified by police as Nathaniel Eric and Latasha Smith, were at the Quik Chick takeout stand next to U.S. Highway 1 in Baxley around 3 p.m. Thursday when they complained to owner Jeanette Norris that their chicken was too cold and that they didn’t get enough fries, WTOC reported.

Norris checked the food, spoke with the couple for a few seconds and even refunded their money — before Latasha attacked her, slapping and punching her in the face.

“She went berserk,” Norris told the station. “They both lost it, him and her both; started cussing and beating on the window.”

Then the owner’s 15-year-old daughter walked out of a truck parked in front of the eatery — only to be immediately socked in the face by Nathaniel, knocking her off her feet, the video shows.

“One of my employees yelled, ‘He’s got her,’ and that’s when I realized he had hit her,” Norris said. “Who does that? Who punches a child like she’s a grown man standing there? He needs putting under the jail.”

When two other customers arrived, the couple drove off in a silver Cadillac Escalade.

Norris was left with a broken nose after the attack — and her daughter suffered bruises and a concussion, the station reported.

Police told the station that the attack was completely unprovoked.

“I’ve been here, what, 41 years — 30 of them as chief,” said Chief James Godfrey of the Baxley Police Department. “I have never seen anything like this. I’ve never heard of anything like this.”

Cops were able to identify the couple based on tips from WTOC viewers, the station reported. They have active warrants for aggravated battery and cruelty to children.

Police told the station that the suspects are “considered dangerous and have a tendency towards violence.”

“The security camera footage that we put out tells it all,” Godfrey added. “That’s just pure brutality.”

Anyone with tips on the suspects’ whereabouts should contact the Baxley Police Department at 912-367-8305, or the 911 Center at 912-367-8111 as soon as possible.

Couple get prison for beating restaurant owner, teen daughter over cold chicken
12 January 2018 | Terry Dickson

A Savannah couple were sentenced to prison Friday for beating a restaurant owner and her 15-year-old daughter in June after complaining of cold chicken and too few french fries, the district attorney said.

Superior Court Judge Robert Guy sentenced Nathaniel Eric Smith, 45, to eight years in prison and seven years’ probation for cruelty to children, District Attorney Jackie Johnson said.

Guy sentenced Latasha Denise Smith, 28, to two years in prison and eight years’ probation for aggravated battery, Johnson said.

Guy also ordered the Smiths to pay $4,000 restitution and banished them from Appling and Jeff Davis counties, she said.

The Smiths pleaded guilty to the two charges in November in Camden County, after Guy agreed to change the venue of the trial because of publicity in Baxley.

A surveillance tape of the beating was shown on every major network and other outlets as Baxley police and other agencies searched for the Smiths. They surrendered in Bryan County nearly two weeks later.

After the Smiths complained loudly about their meal at Jeanette Norris’ drive-through restaurant, the Qwik Chik, Norris offered to refund their money. But outside the restaurant, Latasha Smith began punching Norris.

When her daughter came to help her, Eric Smith immediately punched the teen in the face and knocked her down. Jeanette Norris’ nose was broken, and her daughter suffered a concussion.

Eric Smith’s sentence was enhanced because he had several prior convictions, Johnson said. Guy denied Latasha Smith’s request to be sentenced in accordance with the first-offender statute under which her record would have been cleared eventually if she didn’t violate any more laws.

The victims were present in court and were satisfied with the sentences, Johnson said.
