Man gets jail for mischief and ordered to pay $1,680 for damage caused to car

SINGAPORE - A man was sentenced to four weeks' jail on Tuesday (Nov 8) for committing mischief by kicking the doors of a car in a fit of anger, a court heard.

Fabian Ng Zhi Yong, 30, was also ordered to pay compensation of $1,680 by Friday (Nov 11) for causing damage of the same amount in an incident that happened at about 2.40am on July 1, 2016.

The court heard last month that Ng was in a taxi with an unknown woman when it stopped at the junction of Lorong 39 and Geylang Road. Ms Zheng Ximei, 40, who was driving her white BMW sedan, sounded her horn as the taxi was taking some time.

After alighting from the taxi, Ng got into a verbal disagreement with Ms Zheng.

Ng then kicked the left front door of the car twice before walking off.

Ms Zheng, who remained in the car, drove forward when the taxi moved off. As their verbal disagreement continued, Ng kicked the car again, this time twice on the left rear door.

Ng and the unknown woman then got into another taxi and left the area.

Ms Zheng reported the incident, witnessed by a 35-year-old Chinese national at a nearby eating house, to the police later that morning.

She managed to track Ng down to another eating house near Lorong 16 Geylang, and promptly informed the police. Ng was interviewed by the police.

The total cost of repairs to Ms Zheng's car came up to $1,680.

Ng, who is self-employed, had previous convictions for causing grievous hurt in 2003, causing hurt in 2013, and affray in 2014.

He was allowed to start his sentence on Nov 30.

He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for mischief by causing loss or damage to the amount of $500 or upwards.
