DHL warns of phone scammers asking for personal information
Posted 12 May 2016 23:23

Members of the public received automated phone calls from suspicious-looking phone numbers, which later directed them to an operator asking for personal information.

SINGAPORE: Courier company DHL has warned members of the public that scammers are masquerading as staff manning its hotline to phish for information.

A member of the public who received such a call told Channel NewsAsia the automated voice call said she had a DHL parcel which had not been picked up. Recipients are asked to press "9" to connect to an operator, after which they would be asked to divulge their personal information.

When contacted, DHL told her it was a phone scam and that it has reported it to authorities.

DHL said in a Facebook post on Apr 8 that the automated phone calls came from "suspicious-looking phone numbers" such as +1800 285555, which are very similar to the DHL Express hotline, except with an additional "+" prefix.

Those who receive such suspicious calls are advised to ignore such calls and hang up immediately. Members of the public should not press any number key or provide further information. They should call the police immediately at 1800 2550000 or "999" to report the case.

Police also issued an advisory on phone scams on Apr 8.

3 men arrested for suspected involvement in DHL scam
Friday, Jul 15, 2016  Prabu Krishna Moorthy
SINGAPORE - Three men have been arrested by the police for their suspected involvement in a DHL parcel scam that has caused some to part with their money.

A 21-year-old man and two 22-year-old men were arrested after a 65-year-old woman made a report on July 14 about a call she had received from a person claiming to be working for international courier, DHL.

During the call, the elderly woman was allegedly told that her parcel containing illegal goods was detained by the customs in China. The caller proceeded to threaten the victim with legal action and instructed her to transfer money to an unknown local bank account to prevent the matter from being pursued further.

The victim subsequently transferred $50,000 to the bank account.
Watch out for these scams in Singapore

The 21-year-old suspect who had allegedly withdrawn the money from the account was arrested at Ang Mo Kio Hub three hours after the victim reported the incident to the police. The two other suspects were arrested at Tuas about two hours later on the same day.

The three suspects will be charged in court on July 16. Should any of them be found guilty, they could face imprisonment for up to five years and/or a fine.

Police arrest man over DHL parcel scam
Tuesday, Jul 19, 2016
Singapore, Crime

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 23-year-old man who allegedly stole $36,000 from the bank account of a 32-year-old woman in a DHL parcel scam.

This arrest follows that of three men on July 14 for a similar scam.

The police said they received a report on July 4 from the 32-year-old woman, who said that an unknown person claiming to work for DHL had called to tell her that her parcel had been detained by Chinese Customs for containing illegal goods.

She said the call was then transferred to another person whose number was reflected in the caller ID as "999". This man claimed to be from the police and the woman was asked to provide her Internet banking credentials, including the One-Time Password from her Internet banking dongle.

The woman later discovered that $36,000 was transferred from her bank account to an unknown account.

The police established the identity of the 23-year-old suspect after extensive investigations and arrested the man on Monday (July 18), they said in a statement on Tuesday.

The man is believed to be involved in at least five other similar cases, involving losses totalling about $90,000, police said.

He will be charged in court on Wednesday. If found guilty, he can be jailed up to 5 years, fined, or both.

Many reports of such scams have said that scammers spoked with a mainland-Chinese accent. The man arrested yesterday and the three men arrested on Thursday, however, are believed to be Malaysians.

4th suspect arrested over DHL phone scam
Published: 9:45 PM, July 19, 2016

SINGAPORE — A fourth suspect has been arrested in relation to a DHL parcel scam, police said on Tuesday (July 19).

Last Thursday, three suspects — a 21-year-old man and two 22-year-old men — were arrested following a police report filed earlier that day. The latest suspect is a 23-year-old man who was arrested on Monday.

The latest suspect was arrested after police received a report on July 4 about a woman who had lost S$36,000 in a phone scam. The victim, 32, had been told by a person posing as a DHL employee that she had a parcel containing illegal goods detained by the Chinese Customs. The call was then transferred to another person whose number was reflected in the woman’s caller ID as “999”.

The second person on the line identified himself as a police officer and subsequently asked the victim to provide her internet banking credentials, including the One-Time-Password (OTP) from her Internet banking dongle. Later, the victim discovered that her ibanking account was accessed illegally without her knowledge and about S$36,000 had been transferred to an unknown bank account.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department conducted extensive investigative probes and enquiries to identity the 23-year-old suspect. Preliminary investigations has revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in at least five other similar cases in which the victims had suffered losses amounting to a total of about S$90,000.

The 23-year-old suspect will be charged in court on Wednesday. He faces a jail term of up to five years, or a fine, or with both.

Parcel scams involving people posing as Singapore or foreign officials or courier companies have been emerging here, with the police revealing last month that residents here have lost more than S$4 million since March to these scammers, who operate through phone calls. From March to June, more than 50 police reports were made about people impersonating government officials.
